No dog should ever experience the slightest bit of sadness let alone the trauma that a brave mama dog had to endure.
When she most needed human compassion, the doggo was abandoned on the side of a road together with her tiny newborn puppies.
The mother dog was heartbroken and yet she gathered courage to care for her babies. She wrapped her paws around them, wishing to protect them from all harm.
Although many people passed her by and ignored her, the doggo didn’t give up hope. She kept believing that a good soul would come along and save her and her puppies.
Saving Lives
In December of 2024, Valerie Hicks was heading to Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA), an animal shelter where she holds the position of board president, when a strange sight caught her eye.
There was an open crate on the side of a road in Mississippi and there seemed to be a furry figure lying in it.
Hicks screeched to a stop and soon realized that the furry creature was an abandoned dog, later named Mama Evelyn.
She rushed to check what was going on.
The moment she took a closer look at the doggo, Hicks was shocked to learn the secret that she was hiding.
There were seven newborn puppies huddled close to their mom, seeking her love and warmth.
Hicks was heartbroken when she discovered that the eighth puppy didn’t make it.
Mama Evelyn was looking at Hicks with heartbreaking eyes and the rescuer could see how helpless she felt.
After she called Christina, her rescue partner, to help her, Hicks comforted the mama dog.
The sorrowful dog was still anxious about her babies, but gradually, she started realizing that Hicks was there to help.
“Mom was very nervous, maybe the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. But at the same time, she seemed very grateful,” Hicks told The Dodo.
Once Mama Evelyn arrived at the shelter with her puppies, the staff set up a quiet space for them so that they could decompress.
Carefree Life In A Foster Home
Shortly afterward, the shelter found a great foster family who agreed to take the canine family home and care for them with love.
Mama Evelyn nursed her puppies and tended to their needs.
“This girl is one of the best moms ever. The puppies are pretty robust and seem healthy, and they nurse almost constantly. When not nursing, they are in complete milk comas,” CARA shared on Facebook.
Due to the traumatic experience that she endured, the doggo was a bit distrustful toward humans at first.
However, thanks to the abundance of love she received in her foster home, her true sweet personality started emerging.
The shelter was impressed with the puppies’ progress.
The puppies enjoy spending time with their mother as they continue growing and thriving.
In February of 2025, the doggy family will travel to CARA’s foster-based rescue partner in Maine and they will start looking for their place under the sun.
I hope that the wonderful Mama Evelyn and her puppies will soon find forever families who will shower them with love and who will never let them down.
