Shelter Staff Couldn’t Believe Their Eyes When Owners Returned Mama Dog To Shelter For ‘Not Fitting In’

Shelter Staff Couldn’t Believe Their Eyes When Owners Returned Mama Dog To Shelter For ‘Not Fitting In’

Sometimes, we hoomans tend to forget that animals who grew up on the streets need some time to get used to their new lifestyle.

Letting go of all those hardships they faced isn’t easy so they depend on us to give them the space they need to decompress and relax. This may take them a couple of days or even a couple of months.

Mazie, the pup of today’s story, really needed this. Not only did she spend most of her life on the cold, harsh streets, but she also gave birth to her litter there. This made the whole process so much more stressful.

You Are Safe Now, Mazie

As soon as the NorCal Bully Breed Rescue, a rescue based in Sacramento, California, heard that there was a mama dog taking care of her puppies in a parking lot, they knew they had to go there and help her.

Luckily, the rescue mission didn’t take too long and both Mazie and all eight of her pups were taken to the Sacramento shelter in record-breaking time.

There, the little family began their recovery journey where they could finally focus on themselves and not worry about finding food or shelter.

Patience Is Key

Over time, Mazie’s puppies grew into the cutest bundles of joy ever. Because of this, all eight of them managed to find a loving forever home in no time.

But things were different for their mama.

“Mazie was a little more reserved, a little slower to come around, a little shyer than most people would like. But once she got to know you, she was your best friend! She just needed someone to give her a chance to feel comfortable enough to show that side of herself,” wrote the shelter in a Facebook post

Waiting to see her go to a loving home, too, the shelter began setting up meet and greets where Mazie could meet her potential adopters.

Unfortunately, every hooman said the same – they just didn’t feel a connection with her.

The shelter staff reassured the adopters that she just needed some time to adjust to her new surroundings. One day, a hooman agreed to take Mazie home, but only three days later, the shelter received a heartbreaking email.

“She was even adopted early on and we were so excited for her!!! But then three days later we got the dreaded email…’I’m so sorry but I need to return Mazie. She’s just not fitting in’,” they said.

Unfortunately, this also took a toll on Mazie. She became even shyer, sheltering herself from the world, which became even more difficult to adopt her.

But then, something incredible happened.

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

Luckily, a woman named Mary decided to take Mazie in as her foster, hoping that it would help her open up a bit.

Fast forward a couple of months and the Sacramento shelter received the best news ever!

A woman named Barbra and her husband, Dimitri, were looking for a furry friend who would bring some extra happiness and love into her life. And Mazie caught their eye!

“Their application looked absolutely perfect. And when we spoke on the phone, she sounded like a dream come true. She understood that dogs need time-and love-to feel comfortable in a new home,” they said.

Ever since, the three of them have been living a lovely little life together and they couldn’t be happier.

Mazie has come out of her shell and is completely unrecognizable. She spends her days going on adventures with her parents who adore everything about her, and the shelter staff is absolutely overjoyed.

“Barbara and Dimitri – THANK YOU for letting her get to know you on her time and her terms. This is one of our favorite adoption stories of all time. We could not have dreamt a more perfect home for our perfect girl,” they concluded.
