Shelter dogs spend their days waiting for someone who will choose them and give them a chance to live a life filled with love.
Bernie, a five-year-old shelter dog, knows how sad it feels to be waiting for just a little bit of attention.
The doggo has lived in the kennel of Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh, New York for six months, longing to finally meet his human. Sadly, so far, nobody has come to meet him.
As he waits by his kennel door peering through the kennel bars, Bernie keeps wondering why he is not good enough.
The Pup Is A Hidden Gem

Every time the pup watched other shelter dogs leave their shelter kennels to start a new life with their families, he wished he were in their place.
The shelter staff at Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter adores Bernie and can’t figure out why their boy keeps getting overlooked.
“It’s very disheartening. He is such a hidden gem that someone is completely missing out on,” Ashley Behrens, the acting director at Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, told The Dodo.
People who don’t know Bernie may find his large size and high energy to be intimidating.
However, according to his shelter friends, these qualities set Bernie apart and make him special.

“He is a blast to walk and to hang out with in the yard. He loves to play and chew on hard toys and enjoys running around the yard to get out some of his energy,” Behrens added.
In the past, Bernie was not as full of life as he is now.
When he arrived at the shelter, he was a malnourished pup who needed someone to care for him and help him find the joy of life.
It took weeks for Bernie to get used to his new life in the shelter and start thriving.
Bernie Continues Waiting For His Forever Humans
The staff at the New York shelter is proud of his transformation into a relaxed and confident dog.
They think that Bernie would thrive in a forever home with older teens and adults. His perfect family would be the one who would keep him active and encourage him to continue learning manners.

The lovely pup hopes that his forever humans will soon find him waiting for them at the last kennel at the shelter.
Until that happens, Bernie will continue tucking himself in his bed and dreaming of starting a new life outside the shelter walls.
With all my heart, I hope that the doggo will not have to wait any longer to make his dream come true. He desperately needs someone to notice him and give him a second shot at happiness.
