Having a dog equals having tons of fun. Yet, having a Golden Retriever is on a whole other level, and Brinkley is exhibit A.
Living the best life with his mom, Hannah, in Charleston, South Carolina, Brinkley had everything a dog needs – a nice home, lots of friends, and endless adventures. However, all that soon changed when his family had to move to a new home.
All of a sudden, Brinkley had to start all over again – without his old pals. And, that certainly wasn’t an easy mission.
Missing His Old Buds
Brinkley’s life before moving was every dog’s dream.
He was the happiest boy around, sharing beautiful memories with his fellow Golden friends. They went on playdates, enjoyed delicious pup cups together, and took long walkies with their mommas.
When Hannah moved to a new home in South Carolina, she noticed some changes in her dog’s behavior.
The fact that Brinkley no longer had his old buds next to him certainly took a toll on him. He began to spend his time by the window, casually scanning the neighborhood to see if there were any new friends he could meet.
Then, it happened!
Brinkley was in his backyard hanging by the fence when he noticed another furry face staring at him from the other side.
To say he couldn’t be happier would be an understatement!
Eagerly Counting Down Days
It only took Brinkley a few minutes to make contact with Cedar, also a Golden Retriever – and Brinkley’s first neighbor. Although Cedar was only nine weeks old, the two clicked right away!
“You could just tell that they both wanted to play. When we would go out into the backyard, he definitely had more of a pep in his step. I always had to drag him back into the house and say not yet,” Hannah told The Dodo.
However, given their huge age difference, Cedar’s owners wanted to wait two months until Cedar got bigger – and Hannah immediately came up with the system to keep Brinkley’s mind occupied.
She got a calendar exclusively for Brinkley to mark the date when he could officially play with Cedar. Suddenly, Brinkley had a whole new activity – counting down the days until his first playdate with the new buddy.
Every morning, Brinkley would come down the stairs and check off a day before breakfast. In the meantime, he went to the beach, took long walkies with Hannah, and visited a dog park to keep himself busy.
Then, the day finally arrived!
The last day on the calendar was checked off, and Brinkley couldn’t have been happier. Neither could Hannah! They let Cedar into the backyard, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Brinkley and Cedar literally had the time of their lives together. Although it was their very first date ever, the two bonded as if they had been friends all along.
“As soon as our neighbors let Cedar into the fence, they just went crazy. They immediately started chasing each other. Lots of flipping over, lots of wrestling, lots of muddy ears and paws, but definitely worth it”, says Hannah.
With all the countdown behind them, a new era of Brinkley and Cedar began – the era of sleepovers, playdates, and many exciting adventures.
Now that the two are finally the same size, Brinkley no longer has to worry about having a friend because now he has a friend for life!
