While driving through an orchard in Fresno, California, a Good Samaritan spotted a heartwrenching scene that made him stop in his tracks.
There was an abandoned and heartbroken dog on the side of the road that seemed to be in need of help.
The man got out of his car and approached her. He was surprised when he saw that the doggo was protecting seven little puppies.
He wished to rescue all the dogs and take them with him. Since there were too many of them and the mama dog was frightened and suspicious of him, he came up with another solution.
Winning The Mother’s Trust
The man contacted Helga Weiss, the president of Paw Squad 559 and co-founder of California Spay and Neuter, and told her about the abandoned family’s situation, asking her for help.
Weiss agreed to help and told the man that she would collect the family the next morning.
Before the Good Samaritan continued his journey, he left food and water for the mother and her puppies and dropped a pin to their location.
That night, Weiss couldn’t stop thinking about the brave mama dog who had to fight for her babies and protect them from all harm.
“[A]ll I could think about was the puppies and the poor mom trying to defend her children,” she told The Dodo.
The next morning, Weiss rushed to the location to collect the doggy family.
As soon as she arrived and got out of her car, she saw the dogs and started talking to them. She was brokenhearted because heartless humans betrayed them and left them out in the cold.
The fur babies seemed to have recognized that they could trust Weiss. They began walking toward her with their eyes, wagging their tails. Their eyes twinkled with hope.
The mama dog, later named Mother Goose, was extremely distrustful of people. The moment she saw Weiss approaching, she started barking at her and warning her to stay away from her family.
Weiss met a ranch worker and found out that he had been feeding them for several days. If it hadn’t been for his help, the doggy family would have been starving.
The ranch worker revealed that Mother Goose had eight puppies and that sadly, one of them was snatched by a coyote.
Weiss felt devastated. She understood the mother’s worry and suspicion.
Mother Goose And Babies Feel Relieved
She sat next to her and began feeding her sausages, trying to gain her trust.
Finally, two and a half hours later, Mother Goose realized that Weiss only wanted to help her and her babies.
The mother dog let Weiss pick her and the puppies up and put them in her car.
The kind-hearted woman started crying as she cuddled the doggo.
When Mother Goose noticed Weiss’ tears rolling down her face, she kissed them away.
“As soon as I picked her up and loaded her up into my car, she actually started licking the tears off my face. It was adorable,” Weiss added.
Thriving In A Foster Home
Save-A-Mutt, a rescue in Stanwood, Washington, took the doggy family into their care and placed them in a loving foster home.
Shortly after welcoming them into her home, their foster mom, Christie West, realized that there was something wrong with the puppies and she rushed them to the vet.
The furbabies were diagnosed with parvo, an extremely contagious virus that can also be fatal.
They were given a new parvo treatment funded by Save-A-Mutt. Once they started feeling better, the furbabies were discharged from the veterinary clinic and were returned to their foster home.
West was worried for the puppies and she gave them around-the-clock care. Thankfully, thanks to her dedication and the new treatment, they pulled through and started flourishing.
The furbabies were named Itsy Bitsy, Star Light, Little Bo Peep, Twinkle Twinkle, Humpty Dumpty, Peter Piper, and Miss Muffet. They are now healthy pups who enjoy their puppyhood.
In four weeks, the puppies will move to Save-A-Mutt in Washington where they will start searching for forever homes.
Until then, their foster mom will be doting on them and showering them with affection.
Thanks to compassionate humans, Mother Goose and her puppies will soon start a new life filled with the love that they deserve.
