When a resident in Tunica County, Mississippi, noticed that Wilbur, his former neighbor’s pup, was circling around the neighborhood, his heart sank. The man realized that the canine’s owners left him behind after they moved out.
Wilbur didn’t know that his family had let him down. The pooch spent his days tirelessly searching for food in the nearby fields and hoping that his parents would return for him.
As time went by, Wilbur began losing hope that he would ever see his owners again. His brown eyes became full of sadness.
The dog’s neighbor fed him a few times, and he contacted Tunica Humane Society, asking them to help Wilbur.
Saving A Dog Who Was Let Down By His Family
As soon as Sandy Williams, the director of the shelter, heard about the abandoned canine who needed her help, she dashed to the site to rescue him.
The first thing she noticed when she arrived was a “Beware of the dog” sign that was posted in front of the pup’s former home.
Williams became cautious as she walked towards the house, not knowing who she would find.
After hearing footsteps approaching him, Wilbur appeared from under the porch where he was lying.
Williams’ heart broke when she saw the terrible condition he was in. The pup’s eyes were brimming with tears. He looked incredibly sad.
“Every rib on his body was showing. His face was literally sunk in from going so long without food and water. What I remember most was his tear-stained face. You could see so much hurt and confusion in his sad eyes,” Williams told The Dodo.
At first, the brokenhearted pooch was distrustful of his rescuer. He felt frightened and he kept his distance.
Williams knew that Wilbur was hungry, so she offered him some food. The doggo let go of his fear and decided to trust her. He walked towards the food and began eating.
Wilbur Feels Hopeful Again
Wilbur’s rescuer gently secured him with a leash and took him to his car. She rushed him to the vet’s office, so that he could get a complete medical checkup and the care he needed.
The vet informed Williams that the pup had a potential head trauma. He was also infected with heartworm.
People who saw Wilbur at the vet’s office that day felt deeply saddened to see him in such a state. Everyone showered him with cuddles, which the canine needed more than ever before.
After seeing how much they cared for him, Wilbur started feeling a bit better. Although he was still scared, the pooch sensed that the good humans would help him.
“At the vet’s office, I saw a flicker of hope in Wilbur’s eyes,” Williams added.
While his rescuer and his caregivers petted him, the doggo timidly wagged his tail for the very first time. They felt overjoyed because they knew that Wilbur now trusted them.
Williams and the shelter staff posted about Wilbur’s heartbreaking situation on Facebook. People who saw the post were deeply moved by the tears in Wilbur’s beautiful eyes. Many of the pup’s well-wishers from across the country offered to take him home.
The Family Of His Dreams
Fortunately, a local family contacted the shelter, saying that they wanted to foster Wilbur and help him become a healthy and happy pup.
The sweet dog moved in with his foster family and he fit in perfectly in their home in Tunica, Mississippi. The family’s other four dogs accepted Wilbur and welcomed him to the pack.
Wilbur’s foster family fell in love with him and decided to make him a permanent member of the family. His parents promised Wilbur that they would cherish him forever.
They shower him with the love that he missed in his life. Wilbur feels truly happy to finally have parents who adore him and make him feel safe.
