When you lose a pup, nothing can truly fill that void of emptiness. The best you can do is remember all those cherished memories and look through pictures that remind you of your beloved pooch.
Jessica Sattelberger and her partner, Adam, faced that heartbreak when their rescue dog, Myrtle, crossed the rainbow bridge. After losing his battle with terminal cancer, the couple had to say the hardest goodbye but made a promise in advance.
In honor of Myrtle’s memory, Jessica and Adam decided to help one more pup in need…and that dog was – Shmoo!
Jessica And Adam Kept Their Promise
Jessica, who is also a volunteer at a shelter in Los Angeles, California, has always had a soft spot for dogs. When she and Adam heard about a dog surrendered to the shelter in Queens to be euthanized, they didn’t want to waste time.
The couple immediately applied for the dog, named Shmoo, who was four years old at the time.
“When Myrtle passed away, we promised her that we would help another dog and when we saw that this girl was about to be at risk of euthanasia, we knew we had to help,” Jessica states in the Instagram video.
Shmoo, who was labeled anxious and timid, was finally home. Yet, for the first couple of months, getting her to socialize with her new hoomans was challenging.
Shmoo, the big cloud-faced dog with a concerned look, would take pets, but still wouldn’t sit on a couch or trust her owners fully to come out of her shell. She definitely needed time to acclimate to the new environment, and Jessica and Adam had plenty.
“She’ll have a yard and a house and two people that already love her so much and I think Myrtle would approve,” she added.
The couple did everything in their power to make Shmoo’s life comfortable.
Then, one day, things started to change…
Shmoo Gets To Live A New Life
Shmoo’s anxiety was still strongly displayed, only now – Shmoo didn’t shy away from showing affection to her new people. Instead of hiding in the corner of the house, she took to Jessica and Adam and wouldn’t let them out of her sight even for one moment.
Shmoo, who felt so much more comfortable, now loved sitting on the couch with the couple and holding their hands. After a heartbreaking past, she finally found the ultimate comfort in her humans – and they couldn’t be more grateful.
Slowly, but steadily, Shmoo began to explore her new environment. Her unique, fashionable look earned her lots of admirers whenever she went for a walk.
And, she finally got to experience all the joys of being a dog.
The only challenge Shmoo faces at the moment is her hip dysplasia, which makes it difficult for her to enjoy walks to the fullest. She’s currently on pain medication and gets the best treatment possible from her owners.
But, despite all that, Shmoo seems perfectly happy with her new life. She finally has a home and people who won’t abandon her the way her previous family did.
From now on, Shmoo will be loved, cherished, and cared for just like her late brother, Myrtle.
