When Dareth, a rescue advocate, was driving in a West Virginia neighborhood, she saw a sight that broke her heart into pieces.
There was a sad dog who was tied up outside a family home. While standing in the snow, his paws were freezing and he shivered from the cold.
The doggo, later named Buddy, looked around with a heartbreaking expression on his face as if he was pleading with people to help him.
Dareth couldn’t stop thinking about Buddy and called animal control, hoping that they would rescue him.
Refusing To Give Up On Buddy
Unfortunately, the animal control officers informed her that they couldn’t do anything because keeping a dog chained up was legal in West Virginia.
Dareth refused to give up on Buddy and started talking to his neighbors in order to find out more information about him.
The locals told her that the doggo lived with his family for thirteen years and that they always kept him chained outside.
She also learned that one of Buddy’s neighbors cut a hole in his fence so that he could feed him.
Buddy managed to break free a couple of times. He wandered around the neighborhood.
Since he didn’t know where else to go, the dog returned to his home each time and his owners continued mistreating him.
After hearing what a miserable and sad life Buddy lived for thirteen years, Dareth decided to talk to his owners and convince them to surrender him.
The big-hearted woman knocked on their door, but there was no answer. She continued trying to talk to them for the next two days, but it was all in vain.
Dareth felt like she didn’t have any other options so she took Buddy with her. She petted him and the doggo melted in her arms.
Buddy was grateful to her for rescuing him.
Dareth drove him to the vet where he was examined. He was diagnosed with Lyme disease and had a bad urinary tract infection.
The vet couldn’t estimate Buddy’s age. His teeth were severely worn because he chewed on the metal chain for years.
Living The Life Of His Dreams
After Dareth posted Buddy’s story on Facebook, the adorable dog caught the eye of her friend’s parents. They were retirees who had been contemplating the idea of adopting a senior dog.
When they saw Buddy, they knew they had to help him.
Dareth was over the moon. She knew that the big-hearted couple would be an amazing family to Buddy.
Since the doggo lived his whole life outside, it wasn’t easy for him to adjust to his new home.
At first, he refused to eat out of his bowl so his new parents fed him by hand.
Little by little, he regained confidence. He realized that he had parents who loved him and that life was wonderful.
Buddy loves his family and he is always by their side. He enjoys going on walks and car rides, but more than anything else, he loves lying on his soft bed and playing with his stuffed toys.
