What is the first thing you think about when somebody says the word “dog”?
I personally immediately picture a happy pupper, running around the park, saying hi to everybody they come across. And this is usually the type of dog that manages to find a forever home in a matter of days.
Unfortunately, some pups aren’t as energetic. Whether it is because of their personality or their rough past, they prefer to sit in the corner and stay quiet. Unfortunately, this means many potential adopters overlook them, forcing the pups to extend their stay at the shelters.
Perfect Timing
Kels McDonough is the proud owner of the McDonough Rescue – a foster-based rescue program in Los Angeles.
When she is out looking for pups to adopt, she doesn’t go for the happy and energetic dogs. Rather, she opts for those who shy away to the corners.
One day, when she visited a crowded shelter, she found out about a pack of furry friends who were minutes away from euthanasia. Without a single moment of hesitation, Kels signed their adoption papers and took them into her loving arms.
However, she noticed that a pup named Nash wasn’t doing too well.
Because of the loud and stressful environment of the shelter, Nash began shutting down and falling into depression.
Kels believed that, over time, Nash would come out of his shell, but that simply wasn’t the case. Even while at home, this sweet boy clinged to Kels, following her every move – not because he wanted the attention, but because he was terrified.
Luckily, Kels was so determined to help this sweet boy that she gathered all the patience and love she had in her and gave it all to him.
One Day At A Time
Looking for clever ways to help him, Kels decided to bring Nash along whenever she went on adventures with her pup, Lou.
The three adorable friends began visiting all kinds of places and seeing the prettiest views. But even with this big change, Nash just wouldn’t budge.
Until one day, he just started running!
It was as if he finally understood that he had managed to come across a person who wanted nothing but the best for him.
And he didn’t just stop at running, he also began hiking, playing with the Kels and his furry sibling. Seeing him transform from a terrified puppy into a happy dog filled the rescuer’s heart with joy.
Ever since, the two have been absolutely inseparable. Wherever Kels went, Nash was running behind, making her giggle and laugh.
