Goodbyes are really hard. When you love someone, it doesn’t matter if you part ways for a week, two weeks, a month, or even a year – the feeling of emptiness is essentially the same.
For dogs, saying goodbye to their owners is just the tip of the iceberg.
Unaware that they are seeing their beloved humans for the last time in a long while, these four-legged creatures spend days standing by doors, peering through windows, watching from their yards, and simply anticipating their owners’ return.
That’s exactly what happened to Murphy, a long-time family dog, when his mom, Janna, had to leave for military duties.
Murphy Couldn’t Believe His Eyes
It’s safe to say that Jenna and her dog, Murphy, are soulmates.
They have shared so many beautiful memories together and couldn’t imagine life without each other. That’s why it was extremely hard for her to leave Murphy in Salem, Ohio, at her parents’ house when she had to leave for military training.
The two spent eight long months apart, counting the days until they would see each other again.
“Anyone who tells you breakups are hard has never loved and had to leave a dog,” Janna wrote in one of her Instagram posts.
Janna knew how heartbreaking it would be without Murphy, so she recalled all the good memories the two had created along the way.
“Thank you so, so, so much for being the best roommate I could’ve dreamed of, for only destroying two pairs of my Nikes, for being the only running buddy I need, for being an amazing vacuum, and for giving me the chance to be your big spoon every night I go to sleep,” she added.
Then, eight months later, the day finally came!
Janna arrived at her Ohio home expecting to see Murphy frantically running toward her, but that didn’t happen.
Instead of approaching his beloved owner, Murphy looked all confused at first. He kept his distance until Janna called him by his name.
A few moments later, he slowly approached her, still unaware that the woman in front of him was actually his mom.
When he finally recognized the well-known smell he had missed for so long, Murphy switched to his wiggle mode! He was all cuddles and kisses in seconds, finally giving his momma the reunion she had dreamed about all this time.
At one point, Murphy’s enthusiasm caused him to knock Janna to the ground, but she didn’t mind.
After all this time, the two were finally together, and that was all that mattered.
The video of Janna and Murphy soon went viral, warming the hearts of millions of people around the world.
