If there is one thing that can make any dog feel incredible dread and heartbreak, it’s being abandoned by those they care about the most.
What makes this even more painful is that they can’t actually understand why their owner isn’t with them anymore. The idea of abandonment isn’t something that they understand at first.
The only thing that is left is heartbreak, and many dogs just don’t know how to deal with it. They withdraw completely, and pulling them back is really difficult.
This sweet dog was going through the same problem when he was first surrendered to the shelter. Luckily, he had someone amazing to help him.
Rocky Kanaka Arrives To Help
When pet rescue advocate, Rocky Kanaka, from California first came to meet Chance, all he saw was a sad face through the kennel doors.
He looked like he was both scared for his future and hopeful at the same time. It was hard to define. Maybe he still hoped the owner would return for him.
Kanaka was curious about his story, and you could just tell at first glance that this sweet dog had been through a lot.
He would ask around and the story he learned was shocking. Apparently, Chance was first seen running through the streets of California.
A Good Samaritan was sad to see this dog on his own, so he called the rescuers for help. They took him in and realized that he had a microchip on him.
At first, this seemed like good news because he could just be returned to his owner and that’s it. Well, that’s not exactly what happened.
When they made the call about Chance, the owner simply told them: “Chance is no longer my dog.”
After that, he hung up, leaving the rescuers in shock. They couldn’t comprehend how someone could just abandon their dog with such a cold heart.
Hope For Chance
The only thing they could do now was do their best to help him recover from this trauma. He needed to recover so that he could find someone who would treat him the way that he deserved.
The Californian rescuer tried to soften him up by giving him soft treats, which seemed to work. They gave him a lot of space and were really patient with Chance.
They quickly realized that this sweet pup only had one tooth left, likely due to his advanced age. He also had some other medical problems.
His eyes were cloudy, his ears dirty, and he was a bit overweight. Fortunately, most of these problems can be fixed with treatment and proper care.
He was placed on a walking program that would help him with his weight, and he was receiving daily treatment thanks to his rescuers.
Hopefully, in a few months, he will be a few pounds lighter, which will make it easier for him to go on walks with his rescuers. It will also help his chances when it comes to adoption.
As time went on, Chance became more cheerful and there was some sense of hope in his eyes. I think he realized that he was with the right people.
Even though the road ahead for Chance is long, there is some hope in knowing that he is with the right people and they will make sure that he gets to live a wonderful life.
