Injured Puppy With A Swollen Head Was Whimpering On The Roadside, Hoping That Someone Would Help Him

When a kind lady heard helpless whimpers coming from the side of a road, she rushed to see what was going on.

Having followed the desperate cries for help, she came across a heartbreaking sight. A little puppy was sobbing on the ground. His head was swollen due to a trauma that he suffered.

The pup, later named Thomas, was in urgent need of help and he was barely holding on to life.

The lady immediately drove him to the Bradshaw Animal Shelter in Sacramento, California, hoping that it was not too late.

As soon as he reached the shelter, the staff took him to the hospital.

After he took an X-ray, it became clear that the two-month-old pup suffered a fracture on his skull. The officials were sure that Thomas was a victim of animal cruelty.

Whenever the vet staff heard him crying in his kennel, his caregivers felt heartbroken.

They pampered him with care and fed him nutritious meals.

Luckily, Thomas was eating well, and soon, he made an effort to stand on his paws, showing everyone that he was a fighter.

Unfortunately, after the vets performed further testing, they discovered that the pup had fragments of bones in the right hemisphere of his brain.

Due to the trauma that he sustained, he became blind in one eye.

The vet staff consulted experts at UC Davis Veterinary Medicine, a medical center, based in Davis, California, looking for the best course of action for the dog.

The Pup Undergoes Surgery

In order to give Thomas the best chance for a normal life, they decided to perform craniotomy surgery and remove the fragments from his brain that were causing neurological damage.

Thomas’ caregivers gave him a lot of love and the pooch felt better. He surrendered to his human friends, believing that they would do what was best for him.

Fortunately, Thomas’ surgery was successful.

The vets hoped that the pup would make a recovery despite the defect in his brain.

“While Thomas does still have a large defect in his brain from the injury, his young age and the brain’s high capability for repairing itself, along with the aid of the surgery gives us hope for recovery,” Bradshaw Animal Shelter wrote in a Facebook post.

The staff monitored him and cuddled him often, letting him know how much they loved him.

Two weeks after he was rescued from the roadside, Thomas was discharged from the hospital.

Recovering In A Loving Foster Home

He moved to foster care where he was showered with a lot of love.

At first, the pooch needed some time to adjust to his foster home because he could only rely on his right eye.

“Thomas is doing great! When he first came home, he was having trouble adjusting to relying on just his right eye and bumped into things with frustrating, yet adorable results. But he’s one smart cookie and has quickly learned to compensate,” his foster family said in an update, shared on the shelter’s Facebook.

Little by little, Thomas began recovering and showing his playful disposition. He loved exploring his surroundings and getting tangled in a rope.

Feeling safe and loved in his foster home, he continued making progress.

Everyone who knew Thomas was happy to see him thriving.

Although he was hurt in the past, the dog enjoyed spending time with people.

Otis met his doggy brother Jax and the two became best friends.

The pup feels overjoyed. He enjoys soaking up his family’s love.
